Second language comprehensibility as a dynamic construct

چکیده
This study examined longitudinal changes in second language (L2) interlocutors’ mutual comprehensibility ratings (perceived ease of understanding speech), targeting as a dynamic, time-varying, interaction-centered construct. In repeated-measures, within-participants design, 20 pairs L2 English university students from different backgrounds engaged three collaborative and interactive tasks over 17 minutes, rating their partner’s at 2–3 minute intervals using 100-millimeter scales (seven per interlocutor). Mutual followed U-shaped function time, with (initially perceived to be high) being affected by task complexity but then reaching high levels the end interaction. The also became more similar each other early on remained aligned throughout These findings demonstrate dynamic nature between interlocutors suggest need for research account effects interaction, task, time measurements.

The current study investigated first language (L1) effects on listener judgment of comprehensibility and accentedness in second language (L2) speech. The participants were 45 university-level adult speakers of English from three L1 backgrounds (Chinese, Hindi, Farsi), performing a picture narrative task. Ten native English listeners used continuous sliding scales to evaluate the speakers’ audio...

A cornerstone in the object-oriented paradigm is the abstraction mechanisms transcending analysis, design, and implementation. The notions of class, object, behaviour, and inheritance are supported in both design notations and through programming language constructs in object-oriented languages. An association is a declarative mechanism to associate objects, and it is well known from analysis a...

متن کاملContext as a Dynamic Construct
Context is a dynamic construct. Although some contextual situations are fairly stable, discernable, and predictable, there are many others that are not. Similar looking contextual situations may actually differ dramatically, due perhaps to people’s previous episodes of use, the state of their social interactions, their changing internal goals, and the nuances of local influences. The consequenc...
متن کاملThe Network as a Language Construct
The actor model inspires several important programming languages. In this model, communicating concurrent actors collaborate to produce a result. A pure actor language tends to turn systems into an organization-free collection of processes, however, even though most applications call for layered and tiered architectures. To address this lack of an organizational principle, programmers invent de...
